The New School of Montpelier (NSM) is seeking an Executive Director. NSM’s mission is to prepare students with complex challenges for successful lives. NSM opened it’s doors in 2005 and became an employee owned company in 2015. It currently has campuses in Montpelier and Glover, with approximately 80 staff and students.

The Executive Director works with the Board to develop policies and strategies, as well as lead managers to create and plan future initiatives. This position ensures there are vision, planning, resources, and evaluation systems in place.

Successful candidates will have strong skills in building effective teams, strong communication skills, decision making skills, and ability to manage conflicts. NSM is looking for candidates with experience in supervision, management, leadership, supported employment, complex disabilities and special education.

The Executive Director will provide an opportunity to strike a balance between inspirational leadership and democratic governance. A qualified candidate would possess a current license or certification in their field and in administrative areas.


  • Supervise school managers;facilitates the Administrative team and leadership team meetings.
  • Develop and oversee the annual budget, revenues, expenditures, and cash flow.
  • Authorize contracts with sending districts, employees, and contracted service personnel.
  • Initiates contracts with legal, accounting, and other outside services.
  • Actively participate in external groups and committees to be aware of trends, opportunities and challenges, in particular the Agency of Education, Council of Independent Schools, Vermont Council of Special Education Administrators, and the VT Independent School Association.
  • Project the needs of the market and the skill, staffing and space capacity.
  • Recommend the school calendar, with inservice days, holidays and vacations for approval by the Board.
  • Finalizes professional development plan for the school.


  • Master’s Degree and licensed in the practiced discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Director Of Special Education License is recommended.
  • Five years or more as a successful leader in an educational, academic, or human services organization (preferably in special education, complex disabilities, children’s services, and/ or supported employment).
    An understanding of the IDEA, Vermont’s Agency of Education, the supervisory union system, and independent school approval requirements.
  • Successful experience with collaborative decision-making models.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills and experience.
  • Written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
